Looks absolutely fantastic, thanks! :D I'll stick it in the game today and I'll shoot you instructions for how you can change the files in the release you downloaded so that you can go and fight him.

Did you want to prescribe any specific name/title to this creature? "Salamander" seems a little generic for such a fierce-looking enemy, not to mention salamanders typically don't have four arms. :heh: We could name him "Demon Salamander" or "Mutant Lizard" or something similar. Or if we want to take a more creative approach, maybe give him a very unique name. For example if you look here: http://allacrost.svn.sourceforge.net/vi ... e/enemies/ we have some generic names, and some very unique names as well like "Daemarbora" for an evil tree that is on fire. Its your creation, so the name is up to you.

Well, yes, the name "salamander" is a generic placeholder, but I had to call it something!

Just as I called the other two sketches "the mouth" and "the face"

I'll look up some mythological references to see if there's any lizardlike creature whose name I'd like to promote, or maybe I'll come up with something. Either way I'll tell you soon.

The following days I'll be pixelling for other projects, I'll come back to this one in three or four days. What should I do first, the buffed-up version of this guy, or one of the other sketches?

Sounds good. When you get a name to me I'll add him into the game (we need a name so we can properly set filenames and such).

I'd go ahead with your other two sprites first before making a variation of the salamander. The reason being that we're only going to have one salamander in our next release and any variations of him won't be encountered until much later in the game. Its generally a good idea to work on the stuff we need now rather than the stuff we need later, right? :)

Fine, is Spawn of Tiamat ok?

Edit: I've been looking for some local mythological names but don't really like them for this one, nor have I found any reptilian-thing-name that rang true, so this name is the first acceptable thing that came to mind.

Hmm, I don't like having "of" in the name. I think Tiamat Spawn would do. Although I'm a little :/ about that since it implies that there will be, somewhere, a Tiamat. :heh: Seeing as this guy is part of an army of demons I had the thought of maybe calling him "Demonic Lizard", but we don't want to have a bunch of enemies named "Demonic X" either. So I looked up synonyms for demonic: http://thesaurus.com/browse/demonic

Possible ideas:
"X Y", where X and Y may be:

X
Demonic
Wicked
Infernal
Diabolic
Fiendish
Hellborn
Hellish
Vile
Satanic
Savage
???

Y
Salamander
Lizard
Spawn
Caecilian
???

* Note: Salamanders are classified as amphibians, not lizards. If we want to stay consistent, we'll want the name to match the sprite. A reptile has dry scaly skin while amphibians have moist skin.

Any particular combinations you like? These are just one of many options of course.

Well, I had thought about the tiamat issue.

What about Stygian Lizard?

That way we could call the fire version Stygian Salamander, which would kind of make sense since salamanders are symbolic of fire, while being amphibians, and Styx is a river in the underworld. Hell, I could even paint the other version in salamander-y colors.

That, unless you count the river Styx is the same case as Tiamat, but I think that a landmark sounds much more neutral than a goddess.

I agree with everything you said and I like the name as well. Stygian Lizard it is. :)

That is one awesome looking Stygian Lizard! :approve:

One comment: I predict once in the game it will be hard to see the lizard is actually damaged, just because of the color of its skin and blood. Maybe its blood should be purple or green or something so it's more visible

I had the same thought too actually, but I don't think its a huge deal. On another thought, it might be cool to show some of the wrist bands getting cracked/broken in the damage frames along with the body damage. Just a thought.

Good! Finally we agreed.

The idea of cracking the 'lets also came to my mind, but I wasn't very convinced. Anyway, editing in pixel art is a quick affair.

Since now it has an official name, I'll upload it to pixeljoint.

You know, I was thinking about this name... while cool, it implies 2 things: one, that the world of Allacrost has a hell with the river Styx running through it, and two, that this lizard is from hell, and not a distant land to which his race was banished... (which I believe is the underlying background?).

Hey, here's the new WIP.

Image

I'm ditching the "mouth" because it wasn't turning out good in pixel :/

Prehaps I'll do something else, I don't know.

LOL @ your "even shittier" comment. :)

One thing that strikes me is the sharp cut between the metal gloves/boots and the body. There doesn't seem to be any transition there at all and it somewhat looks like the gloves/boots are simply pasted on the image, rather than being a part of the image itself. Maybe his body can emit some sort of green mist and help ease the transition from its body to its clothing?

Looking good for the most part though. Keep it up. :approve:

I think a scull for the face would fit quite well.

Sweet! I like what you did for the damage frames especially. So, does this enemy have a name?
