Wow, he looks awesome :approve: In battle mode the sprite size is in terms of 64x64 pixels, unlike in map mode where it is 32x32 pixels. But since he's 128x128, that works out great. :D

I love surprises. :)

The results confirm that handdrawn sketches work excellently for battle sprites :) I am not positive about this... but I believe the monster sprites from Final Fantasy were made from scans.

This was my attempt of making the Slow Demon, which was one of Vendetta's concepts sketches. The pose makes me thing he casting he prepared to cast a spell. I renamed the demon to "Deceleon". The problem with this one is that I think he looks rather dull :(.

My best friend said that he has a bad pose and facial expression... I think I beg to differ (That's kinda surprising) I think the pose itself looks quite mechanical, and the face I think is really creepy I am actually amazed with this one to be honest :). Is it just me or does he also remind you a little bit of Lavos in Chrono Trigger?

:approve: Excellent.

I hope that, if roos' code that he provided earlier works, that "flame particles" can be instantiated around those tongues of flame on this fellow's branches - if so, he could, with nothing but his single frame, have quite a bit of movement to him.

It's nothing really wrong with him, but I think what might solve what you don't like about him, would be to make him look considerably less human. Not the frame of the body so much, but the face.

He has some suggestion of an old man in there, which is good (helps the "slow" factor), but he needs some ... evil, some raw malevolence in there as well.

Great work all around. Sylon ought to jump on the bandwagon and start making some of these, too - I believe I myself am going to jump into some more tile work.

Arcanadrake... hmm just a mystical dragon... Yeah the pose isn't the greatest... I think this was more of a practice sprite.

Woah! ^_^ you've been very busy. These are outstanding

I really like the snake base of the nagaruda, and the coil of the dragon. The poses I think are all good and suggest conflict. The outline of the naga's weapon could be improved, either lightened or changed to give more of a feel of the shape and lighting, like you've done for arcanadrake's neck.

Wow this is great stuff. Except I'm not sure what your technique is? You draw them and scan them and them color them in like me? Could you tell me in detail? Because as Jetryl suggests, if I jump on the bandwagon, I'd like to know how to do it first!! Heheh!!

Nice work.

hahah!!!! HAHAHA! These sprites are deliciously *evil. (in a good way of course)

The multifaced guy...He reminds me quite a bit of ...Lavos. (apparently I am not the only one who sees the similarities. ;) I think his pose is PERFECT. Don't change a thing. You nailed the mechanical aspect...it does make him look colder. Wow.

awesome poses...way to crank it out. This work really starts us off on the right foot with some of the monster sprites.

Everything is fantastic.

*Awesome. :approve:

1] Draw a pencil sketch on paper. For a lot of people; most people, in fact, drawing on paper is one of the easiest mediums to mess with, and to just get ideas from your head onto the page.*

You don't need to ink this sketch (since it's not the final thing, instead it's just a guide for you to trace over), or clean any of the smudges up, but you do need to get the shape and all the details hashed out.

2] Scan it.

3] Trace over it - or draw under it - somehow use it as a guide to make a battle sprite as you are used to doing. This might mean having it in a layer underneath, this might mean having it in a layer above set to multiply - and which you'd later turn off - make invisible. Whatever works for you.

I'm guessing this is S-K's workflow, and hopefully this saved him some typing. If I got anything wrong, please correct me.

It's a good guess Jetryl :)

Anyhow the way I make these are pretty simple... First and for most, you have to draw a fully shaded sketch... moderate detail. Yes this is shock... because scanners destroy shading horribly, but the image is going to do be scaled down... hence the shading will mesh at smaller resolution (I scan 300 about 2000 x 2000 then I minimize them to 72 about >320 x >320. From there I add pixel details (yes in fact pixeling is still the most important part of the picture)

Since I use photoshop, I never have to use multiply layers... (unless for a effect or detail) I just use hue/saturation and/or gradient maps... both filters and adjustment layers.

Here is all of mine in total.

I smell a new battle artist! Muahahahah

I still don't get it though. How do you make them so quick? The pixelling part for me takes a very very long time to do! Plus I don't have a scanner I have a digital camera (good enough but scanners are a tad better to work with).

Yeah, I understand that... not to mention I see how it takes you so long. Its quite tedious to pixel monsters... I thinks yours have a lot of details which makes your awesome.

Actually it's a misconcept. Digital cameras actually do justice on traditional works, because it doesn't have to create it's own light. Scanners cast light and it sadly reflects back on pencil sketches... because graphite is nothing but shiny dust particles...

I would say use your digital camera... but that's a challenge because to get the best results you'll have to create a proper mount for your art work (Pin it on to a piece of foam core that can be placed on the wall... use a timer on the camera... with a tripod... make sure you have a pure white light.... that is n't directed perfectly on to the surface of artwork... (yeah... tedious)

Holy crap dude, these are amazing. :eyespin: I think that we should definitely put these on the artwork section of the new site once we launch it. I think that these designs will really help us to recruit for the AAA (Allacrost Artist Army). :D

It would be really nice if someone (anyone) could start adding information on developing this type of artwork to this wiki page http://allacrost.sourceforge.net/wiki/i ... ction=edit

Yes Safir yours kind of have a lot of flat colors, not precise detail like mine, but still, it was done fast. How do you colorize them in photoshop? Don't you have to select precise areas with the pen selector tool before coloring them in? Otherwise your colors will go beyond the lines wouldn't they?

I'd like to see you do one of mine. I'll take a pic of my lion boss, fully shaded, and you color him in the way you do it like that, with flat colors, and then give it back to me and I will pixel in everything 100% and add the shadow like I did to my monsters. It's only if you want to, though. I think we could make this more efficient because I was seriously losing hope in finishing an army of monsters for this game within the next few years even.

Of course I know you're probably full with your portraits and sprite animations but hey, we can always hope for another great artist to come bouncing along!

I'm impressed, as everyone else is. Wowsers! :heh:
