Jetryl asked me to work on some concept art for the Harrvah Architecture, I started work on the basic housing style.

I read that essentially, the people there are typically from a meta-medieval culture, and thus, things should look somewhat medieval, but, that said, they live in a harsh desert environment, so, flat-roofed houses would be more sensible.

I thought about how to do this, and I thought I'd give it the look a culture in the midst of adapting to their new surroundings, hanging onto old traditions, but, slowly changing.

As far as I can gather, the place is a bit run down.. hence the rendering on the house breaking off in some places, and a sheet of material (perhaps metal, depending on its availability in the location, I don't know how scarce it is there.) covering up broken tiles on the sloped part of the roof.

There is a part of the roof that basically is a step in, and it effectively houses an upper level where the owner of the house can go up, and catch the cool evening breeze.

The door design is unusual, in that it is a double-door, but, there is an inverted teardrop window like in the rest of the house above the two doors.

I would've done this with my Wacom.. but, it sadly decided it wanted a day off, acting extremely weirdly, and not viable for usage.

So, grabbed a pencil and paper, and sketched it.

EDIT: I feel it necessary to mention this is basically a quick-and-dirty sketch ;)

Quite. Ironically, it's actually useful in spite of that; partly due to my poor imagination for stuff; I would dare to consider myself good at drawing/rendering a design that's already been defined, but I have a lot of difficulty coming up with new designs from scratch. I'll get there eventually, though. Some of the things you came up with here are very helpful for me.

:approve: Anyways, from this, the window/door design is very cool. I think I'll use that.

As a fair warning, I might not be doing the actual tiles for this for quite some time. I am first working on the desert landscape tiles, and only after those are done, will I do the buildings.

I for one really like this design, and it makes sense to me I think. The heavy stones on the bottom floor help to keep the base of the home cool, while the wooden and plaster top story allows the rising heat inside the house to escape. Plus I think the design itself is pretty unique and is not the "typical RPG house" you find in so many other games.
