Free Art

Postby Roots » Wed Nov 07, 2007 5:48 pm

In the free game dev community, recently a resource has popped up which makes it somewhat easier to find free art that can be re-used in other games. Allacrost's artwork has been loaded up there as well. The site can be found at:

http://freeartsearch.schattenkind.net/

We should be able to find, use, and modify some compatible artwork that is available there.

Found something in the gamedev forums this morning:

http://www.gamedev.net/community/forums ... ID=3096910
However, there is a way you can give back a little of what you've been dealt... If anyone is interested, these are links to the unpaid graphics from two projects I did. Feel free to use them for you own games if you are working on freeware/shareware projects. I only ask credit...

If we wish, we can use this guy's artwork as long as we mention his name in the credits. The style isn't exactly Allacrost (tiles seem 16x16 and lack detail), but we could use it as a base perhaps.

There are a few things from there we could use; especially the props (flowers, pots, etc). Most of it, though, is out of style enough that I can't really be adapted, and would have to be redone, outright.

Stumbled on some more free artwork from the lost garden blog:

http://lostgarden.com/game_HardVacuum.htm

We might be able to make use of some of these terrain tiles after a little modification.

The question is: Do we want that?

Being dutch, I try to live up the name and think of anything free must be good but if it breaks the quality of the game I think it's a bad idea. We could however use it as place holder art and release it with that as such. And if the art is good and doesn't require replacement then we can just let it stay

Just came across a great resource with a lot of free RPG art. This stuff could be great if we make some improvements on it and fit it in with our style. Easier to use this to start with rather than starting from scratch I presume.

Looks like license problems.

These 250 textures are all 128x128. We may be able to scale them down to 32x32 and re-touch them to work for us.

Hmm, do you think we should scale them? Might make more sense to put them into the sheet at regular size, so each one is four tiles instead of one. I've only glanced over them, though.

Good point. Yeah that probably would make more sense. We might not need to scale them at all, but we'd have to make sure that the pieces can still connect together so the image is consistent.

Could these be any more perfect for us? They're already in the 60x60 pixel format we use for our equipment. All we have to do is slap on the border and do some minor edits (the outer pixel layer is transparent for our images).

I am currently producing an indie RPG with the intention of selling it on XBOX 360 and Android. Since you guys are sharing your art on FreeArtSearch, does that mean I would be allowed to use some of it in my game?

I'm not sure to be honest. You need to read the GPL2 license and abide by those terms. Also note that some of the artwork used in this game was borrowed from other projects with compatible licensing. For example, this set of map tiles we used was released into the public domain: http://www.lostgarden.com/2006/07/more- ... phics.html

Your best bet is to really hire a lawyer or get someone with legal experience to answer that question for you. And even if the answer is "legally, yes", its a dick move to be making money off of the backs of the people who work here and not giving anything back. Yes, we use art from other projects. But those projects are all free/open source so we help each other out. There are plenty of GPL-licensed projects which have used some of our art (and code) without explicitly asking permission, and I love it.

More icons from the same project

I'm going to contact these guys and invite them to use existing art that we have for icons as well, as I'm sure we'll be borrowing quite a lot from them so its only fair to offer to return the favor.

Also just found this:

Not sure if the dimensions would fit our sprites or not, but we could always adjust the size to fit or use it as a base/model for creating sprite animations.

I think some of these can go in the prologue:

http://www.opengameart.org/content/10-basic-rpg-enemies

We can use them for enemy map sprites. They don't have animations so we'd have to make those ourselves, but we could just use these basic designs for now.

We should definitely use those.

Ran across this large tileset tonight. The creator said its free to use in non-commercial projects, sah-weet! Lots of great stuff here. I'm going to start pulling in pieces that can be used immediately.
