Re: "Hi, my name is..." (Introduce yourself here!)

Well, upon closer observation, it appears I never posted my introduction here. How remiss of me. So, for future reference, and for anyone who doesn't know me (I'm not exactly active), I'm Alastair Lynn, aka prophile, only here as a contributor, and I do absolutely nothing. Well, apart from the occas...

Re: Sound Distance Attenuation

Birdsong is more of an environmental effect, which would probably be stereo and not have 3D calculations applied. Are you suggesting DSP? Lets see... I will be paraphrasing my audio engine design teacher: 'It depends on how it is recorded. If you have a lot of enviromental sounds you might want to ...

And that's why the GeometricPrimitive can give colour array information. OpenGL interpolates colours between vertices.

Re: I could use a little feedback

It's a nice theory but I think it overcomplicates the issue a little. Might I propose an alternative system: One procedural image contains a set of GeometricShape s. Each GeometricShape is rendered in a separate batch and contains one GeometricPrimitive and optionally one GeometricTexture. It also c...

Re: Somebody says he want to contribute...

1) I think it should be used for "human sounds" (e.g. "augh!", "hiyaa!", "hmmph", etc.) Agreed, as long as it doesn't sound corny. 2) I think it is infeasible to do full voice recording for the entire game and we shouldn't even contemplate that Just how much text would we be talking about here? 3) ...

Re: Getting gettext & translation into Allacrost

You need to be very careful and very consistent in use. In past projects I've worked on, the golden rule is no implicit translation - if you pass a string somewhere, it is YOUR job to translate it; likewise, if you receive a string from somewhere else, you should assume that it's already in the corr...

Re: Getting gettext & translation into Allacrost

Speaking from experience, having a short form for translate functions is very convenient, but _ just makes everybody confused. Personally, I'd just use a one or two letter acronym, like 'TS' (for Translate String) or something along those lines. Makes it clear where the translations are, less easy t...

Re: Sound Distance Attenuation

We're not likely to be using thousands of sounds, so I'd say stick with the inverse square attenuation model since that's the most realistic. If I was designing the sound engine from scratch, I'd make this and doppler shifting an integral part of the engine, but since the engine is already well-esta...

Lua console

An interactive lua console might be helpful for testing the bindings and for debugging map things, so I plan to implement one. It'll work much the same way as running `lua` from the command-line, except in a GUI box in Allacrost activated by pressing an F key (probably). However, I'm unfamiliar with...

Why the cap of 32? If it's all scripted, why not allow the map author to define an arbitrary set of named contexts?
